Paul Whiteman, (1891-1967), American bandleader. Born in Denver, Colorado, he joined the Denver Symphony Orchestra as a viola player at age 16. During World War I he conducted a military band. Whiteman organized his own band in 1919 in San Francisco and, through it became the leading exponent of symphonic jazz, a âsweetâ, mellow music played from written parts and thus differing markedly from âhotâ, improvised jazz. He introduced Rhapsody in Blue (1924) by the American composer George Gershwin and many other notable compositions in the sweet jazz idiom.
When Bix Beiderbecke was dieing from cerosis of the liver, Whiteman cared for Bix until Death.
In 1943 he became musical director of a radio broadcasting company. He is the author of Jazz (1926) and Records for the Millions (1948).
